Marketing/Communications 2017 Summer Intern Project Description

The 2017 Summer intern for communications/development will oversee a four-point project. With this project the intern will gain experience and knowledge in nonprofit best practices involving donor development, working with constituents and marketing plus creative services.

  • Social Media and Multimedia Management

The intern, under the direction of management, will serve as the point-person for managing the chapter’s social media content calendar which includes content creation, daily scheduling and improvisation for all platforms. This project requires a high attention to detail, proofreading and the ability to source materials from multiple locations. The intern will also handle the coordination of all incoming media from volunteers and wish families and oversee the multimedia database.

Experience Benefits: This project affords the intern educational opportunities regarding engaging constituents online, social media best practices, targeting audiences, key components of our organization’s fundraising efforts, and sharing our mission.

  • Signature Event Marketing

The intern will assist the communications manager in promoting the chapter’s coming season of signature events: Trailblaze Challenge & The Wish Ball.  The intern will post on social media regarding the events, assist in creating media advisories, communicating directly to media, undertaking grassroots promotion efforts and aid in creation of collateral materials.

Experience Benefits: This project affords the intern educational opportunities regarding different marketing techniques for varied style of events, peer-to-peer fundraising best practices and marketing/communications media relations.

  • Wish Stories & Fiscal Year 17-18 Wish Books

The intern will be responsible for writing wish stories – engaging and creative tales of a wish kid’s journey and wish experience. The intern will also assist the communications/development staff in the creation of the fiscal year 17-18 photo books (“wish books”.) The project requires the ability to edit and create via Adobe Photoshop as well as implement creative writing skills and having an eye for design. Wish stories & wish books are key components in sharing our mission with supporters. These projects require the ability to implement creative writing skills and to take creative direction and critique.


Experience Benefits: This project affords the intern educational opportunities regarding emphasizing brand standards, strengthening creative writing skills and editing copy to suite different platform usages (i.e. print, electronic, traditional media.) 

  • Community Fundraisers

The intern will assist the communications/development staff in supporting community fundraisers by coordinating distribution of goods, creation of flyers and support materials and relaying information to the supporter as needed. The project requires the ability to edit and create via Adobe Photoshop as well as having an eye for design and utilizing creative problem solving skills.

Experience Benefits: This project affords the intern educational opportunities regarding donor stewardship, event management, and donor development.

Compensation/Credit

This is an unpaid internship. Make-A-Wish South Carolina will gladly work with intern to complete forms for colleges and universities to qualify for academic credit. The intern is responsible for pursuing all avenues of securing academic credit.

Length of Internships

Internships typically last 10 to 16 weeks as mutually agreed upon by the intern and Make-A-Wish South Carolina. Typical internships are 20 hours per week and will not exceed 40 hours per week but hours/daily schedule will be determined on a case-by-case basis with the internship participant.  Ideally, the Summer internship will take place May 29 – September 4, 2017.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to professionally communicate, both orally and in writing
  • Neat penmanship
  • Passion for creative writing and problem solving
  • Ability to handle constructive feedback and take creative direction
  • Be able to balance multiple projects in a deadline driven environment
  • Photoshop and/or InDesign experience is helpful
  • HTML experience helpful
  • Have a passion for helping others and belief in the mission of Make-A-Wish.

Development 2016 Fall Intern Project Description

The 2016 Fall intern for development will oversee a three-point project. With this project the intern will gain experience and knowledge in nonprofit best practices involving donor (individual and corporate) development/research, grant submittal, and event fundraising.

  • Corporate Partner Research and Planning
The intern will be responsible for researching South Carolina companies and businesses who could serve as potential partners with Make-A-With South Carolina. The intern will also be responsible for compiling all information and presenting their findings to the corporate relations manager. The intern will assist the corporate relations manager in all aspects of planning corporate recruitment initiatives.
  • Wish Ball Auction Solicitation
The intern will be responsible for soliciting auction items from Upstate companies and businesses. Intern will need to coordinate efforts with staff auction point person. Solicitation strategy will include face-to-face meetings, mailings, and email correspondence. Intern will be 100% responsible for creating this strategy under guidance of corporate relations manager. Specifically, the intern will need to create 5-10 auction packages to be included in silent auction.
  • Walk For Wishes®
The intern will begin implementing recruitment strategy for wish family and school teams for Walk For Wishes based in the Upstate. The intern will work to connect with wish families and schools through face-to-face meetings, mailings, and emails. The intern will also build a detailed plan to form a walk team based in their college community. Plan must include creating a strategy to support a targeted fundraising goal and team member recruitment.
