The Big Apple is the place to be when you’re an 18-year-old girl like Alex. It is a city that is described as a place where dreams come true and anything is possible. When volunteers asked Alex what she would want if she could have anything, go anywhere, meet anyone, or be anything, exploring that world- where she could feel like every possibility was within her grasp- was what her heart most desired. Alex wished to go to New York City.
A trip to NYC was exactly what Alex needed to forget her struggle with Cystic Fibrosis, even if for a moment. Leaving doctor’s visits and worries behind, Alex stepped from a limousine into the airport. Then, arriving in New York City, she quickly her heart had made the right choice and wanted to see everything the city had to offer. Alex spent her time seeing the sights of the city, but she also snuck in a little time for shopping. Her tours started with a ferry ride, which took her to see the most famous symbol for freedom, next to the flag, the Statue of Liberty. Afterwards, she hopped off the boat and headed towards the Empire State Building for a fabulous panoramic view of the entire city.
Next, Alex decided to spend some time experiencing the other cultures in Little Italy and Chinatown. There was delicious pizza and steamed dumplings galore, but Alex settled on some good old-fashioned street food in SoHo. Alex and her family moved on to the National September 11 Museum and Memorial and then spent the afternoon taking a stroll in Central Park.
Alex spent her last night cheering the New York Yankees on to a 3-0 win over the Houston Astros. While her adventure in New York City had to come to an end, Alex might say that she is now not only a Carolina girl but also a New York girl. For years to come Alex will relive the dreams she discovered in The Big Apple.
