13-year-old Avery from Summerville is battling Leukemia. Avery absolutely loves baseball, particularly the New York Yankees.
In fact, he will tell you that he is their #1 fan, an his favorite player is Derek Jeter. Naturally, when Make-A-Wish® South Carolina volunteers visited Avery and his family,he told them that his wish was to visit New York City to attend a Yankees game and meet the players.
September 5, 2009 marked the beginning of Avery’s wish experience. He and his family- mom, dad and two younger sisters- boarded a plane in Charleston and headed towards the Big Apple. When they arrived, a limousine was waiting to take them to their hotel right in the heart of New York City- Times Square.
When in New York, Avery and his family were treated like royalty. They visited the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Fifth Avenue and explored downtown Manhattan. In addition to being a Yankees fan, Avery also has a genuine interest in history, and it is his favorite subject in school. He was thrilled to have the opportunity to visit the American Museum of Natural History and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
The best part of his trip, however, was attending the Yankees game on September 8th vs. the Tampa Bay Rays. After arriving by limo, Avery and his family took a private tour of Yankees Stadium, met the players and watched the game from their seats behind the dugout. He and his family are forever grateful for this opportunity that allowed them to create memories of a lifetime!
