Lily grew up in a household of hockey lovers, specifically Pittsburgh Penguin fans. When she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma she learned that the famous Penguin’s owner and former professional player, Mario Lemieux has battled the same form of cancer. She felt inspired by his story.
Lily wished to meet Mario so she could hear his story. Mario shared it with her as he held her hands and skated around a private rink with her on her wish. Lily ended her wish feeling emboldened to conquer her cancer and knows that a rewarding future is possible. Lily told nhl.com, "It's very inspiring. He's 20 something years out and I know that one day I'm going to be 20 something years cancer-free too."
The world is her rink now.
